CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR IN MEDJUGORJE
01.01.2004. – Also this year, numerous parishioners and young pilgrims gathered for the Christmas and the New Years vigil in Medjugorje. Many young priests from all over the world accompanied them. As the church is too small to receive such a number of the faithful, a video transmission was arranged at the outside altar, in the new hall and under a tent, so that all may follow the prayer that was led in the parish church. Both vigils began with the Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament and continued with Midnight Mass, which ended at about 1 am. The prayers were translated into 10 languages (English, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Korean, Romanian, Polish, Slovak and Czech). Radio “Mir” Medjugorje broadcasted directly both vigils.

Fr. Frano Music and Fr. Boze Milic conducted the adoration for Christmas vigil, and the Eucharistic celebration was presided by Fr. Tomislav Pervan in concelebration with numerous priests from various countries. In his homily, he spoke about the historical, spiritual and social significance of the birth of Christ.

The New Years adoration was conducted by Fr. Ljubo Kurtovic and the vigil mass was presided by Fr. Mario Knezovic in concelebration with numerous priests from the whole world. In his homily (translated into English, French, German and Italian), Fr. Mario invited young people to go to Christ to receive the answers to their questions. Jesus is demanding and concrete, he asks for a maximum of love, forgiveness and sacrifice, he does not like compromising – and young people are just like that. He invited them to take the step towards the next day in faith, to work for a better world, for a more just world, to be another Christ and the voice of hope for the others, to give witness and shout where people keep silence about God. God gives us the strength for this in the sacraments, and thus, we have to live an intense sacramental life.

The international orchestra and choir, composed of young people and members of different religious communities, accompanied the prayer with music and songs in many languages. This year, we are especially glad about the coming of a group of pilgrims from Hong Kong who joined the musicians and sang the Medjugorje songs in Chinese.

After the New Year’s vigil, young people remained in front of the church for a long time, singing and celebrating.

Jesus says: “Come and follow me!”

Come and enter into the New Year in prayer, with Jesus and Mary!
